Semiotics of metaphorical gesture in contemporary dance: Dance is a complex and multidimensional way of communication. Using the body, and more precisely, movements and gestures, various meanings are conveyed in dance. They often have metaphorical features. A specific type of gesture is the metaphorical gesture, which is an important element of artistic communication. A metaphorical gesture conveys hidden meanings and symbolic content through some kind of incongruity (discrepancy, inconsistency, contradiction) of elements in its structure, such as facial expressions, hand and arm movements. Thanks to the semantic and aesthetic layer of the metaphorical gesture, dance becomes an original form of rhetorical, persuasive and artistic communication. The primary goal of this article is to recognize the specificity and functionality of a metaphorical gesture in dance. On the basis of a semiotic analysis of selected examples of gestures from contemporary dance performances, the functioning of this metaphorical gesture is discussed through the bodily representation of abstract ideas with the use of conceptual incongruence.
