Abstract

Between war and peace. The image of the individual, the state and international relations in Kenneth N. Waltz’s book Man, the state and war: The article is an extended review of the classic book by Kenneth N. Waltz Man, the state, and war, published in Poland for the first time almost 70 years after its American release. Waltz’s proposal — and his three images presenting man as an individual, the state as a union of acting individuals and international relations as relations between states — is an exposition of structural realism. However, his theory, although correct, today requires clarification regarding the conditions for the peaceful existence of the state and supplementation with elements of the just war theory in the reconstruction of post-conflict societies. This article reviews Waltz’s theory and while maintaining its relevance, it proposes new solutions required by a modern understanding of just war theory.
